The Albia Lady Dee softball team is headed back to the state tournament in Fort Dodge. A three-run home run by Jena Lawrence in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Dees a 9-6 victory over 12th ranked North Polk.
Fifth ranked Albia (27-4) will enter the tournament as the #4 seed. They open against fifth-seeded Columbus Catholic of Waterloo (35-4) in a 7:30 p.m. game Monday, July 22. Sixth ranked Columbus beat New Hampton 4-1 to make the state tournament.
The Dees find themselves in the same bracket as top-ranked and #1 seed Davenport Assumption (38-2). Assumption beat West Burlington 11-1 to reach the tournament. Assumption plays Algona (17-10) in the first round. Unranked Algona is the Cinderella (and giant killer) in the tournament. They beat Spirit Lake 8-1 in the regional finals.
In the lower bracket second ranked Louisa Muscatine (33-4), a 1-0 winner over Williamsburg, is the #2 seed and meets 13th ranked and #7 seed Mount Vernon (27-11). Mount Vernon beat Solon 3-2 to reach state. Fourth ranked West Liberty (28-5) is the #3 seed and faces seventh ranked Treynor (30-3), the #6 seed. West Liberty beat Anamosa 7-2 and Treynor beat Southeast Valley 5-3.
