Alexis Gutcher, an Albia junior high softball teammate of Ella Teno, had 12 inches of hair cut to honor her friend. Ella has lost all of her hair as she continues her treatment for leukemia.

Alexis has been growing her hair since the summer Ella found out about her cancer. Her mother, Dacia, has not cut her hair in the past three years, except for the occasional trim.

“I explained to her three years ago how people with cancer normally lose their hair during chemotherapy,” said Dacia Gutcher. “I told her about the several organizations available for people to donate their hair.”

Dacia and Alexis looked into Pantene, Locks of Love and eventually chose the program Wigs for Kids, which does not charge their patients for their wigs. They require 12 inches of hair which can not be colored. For more information you can visit www.wigsforkids.org.
