When the history of Albia and Monroe County sports is written, it’s likely only one man will have this pedigree:

• Assistant Coach, two Albia state tournament baseball teams;

• Assistant Coach Albia state tournament softball team;

• Iowa Babe Ruth Hall of Fame.

Jim Keegel, long-time ACHS baseball assistant, Babe Ruth coach and committee member and now ACHS softball assistant, was named to the Iowa Babe Ruth Hall of Fame during the 13-year-old tournament held in Albia the weekend before last.

Keegel, a Lovilia area farmer, started coaching the Lovilia Indians Babe Ruth team in 1994 when his son, Matt played. The county merged its teams in 2000 and Keegel came with the merger.

In 1999 he earned his high school coaching certificate and served as Boyd Brittain’s assistant with the ACHS baseball program for 16 years. He coached Albia’s 2002 and 2013 state tournament teams and was a part of the state tournament’s longest game, a 13-inning marathon that found Albia on the losing end at Principal Park.

He continued to serve as a Babe Ruth board of directors member, president and vice president, helping bring numerous 13-year-old and 15-year-old state tournaments to Albia.

When Brittain retired as head boys baseball coach, Keegel stepped down as well, but was invited to join Coach Larry Achenbach’s softball program where he has served two years, coaching at this year’s girls softball tournament.

He now has grandsons in the Albia high school and Little League program.
