On Saturday the Albia Community High School Music Department took a trip to Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman to perform at the State IHSMA Contest. This involved 110 high school musicians.
In an historic moment, the Concert Choir under the direction of Alex Steines received straight Division I ratings and two perfect scores (40 our of 40). This is the fifth straight year the Concert Choir has received a I rating.
Both the Mixed Choir and the Concert Band, under the direction of David Perry, received one ballot with a Division I rating and two with Division II ratings, giving them an overall II rating deemed excellent.
Their performances need to meet strict guidelines including performing music off of an approved list of titles. Each ensemble is judged by three professional IHSMA judges and then rated in eight different categories on a five-point scale. They then total the categories and award the corresponding rating. A “V” represents a poor performance, and a “I” represents a superior performance. A Division II denotes an excellent performance.
