‘The Odd Couple’ to be performed Oct. 14-16 by the King Players

The King Players will perform Neil Simon’s iconic play, “The Odd Couple” Thursday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at the King Opera House. A Friday performance will not be done to stay out of the way of Albia high school football.

Jan Starcevic is directing the three-act comedy that tells the story of New York City sportswriter, Oscar Maddison, an incredible slob and his extremely clean and particularly best friend, Felix Unger, who is going through a divorce.

This is Starcevic’s first time at directing after numerous times on stage for the King Players. “I am humbled to be working with such a great cast,” she said.

Bill Hornback from Ottumwa is Felix. He comes with a strong background in theater and has performed with the Ottumwa Community Players in numerous plays and musicals. Dave Paxton is playing Oscar. “It may be a stretch to picture Dave as a divorced, lives in a pig sty type guy, but it will be worth the admission price just to see it.”

The card playing, get together on Friday nights buddies are as follows: Speed, a sarcastic, bust your chops sort of guy is played by Dave Thomas; Mick King, in his first King Players role, is portraying the always worried Murray the cop; Kevin Maughan plays Oscar’s long suffering accountant, trying to keep Oscar out of bankruptcy; Vinnie, the last of the four buddies is played by Phil Summers. This is Summers first acting since high school. Last, but not least, are the Pidgeon sisters. They are not too keen on Felix at first but wind up taking him under their wings much to Oscar’s dismay. Gwendolyn is played by Becky Thomas and Cecily is played by Phyllis Boyer.
