On Sunday, July 31, Janice Crall of Albia was inducted into the Monroe County 4-H Hall of Fame. She will be inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Iowa State Fair.

Crall joined 4-H in Monroe County when she was 11-years-old and was a member for eight years. She participated in what were then the “girls’ projects” of alternating years of food and nutrition, home furnishing, and sewing. She also raised and showed beef calves.

She was selected to be one of the five-member team from Iowa to go to the first Laboratory in Citizenship Education in Washington, D.C. This two-week conference, sponsored by Reader’s Digest, included teams from 10 states and has developed into what is now the yearly Citizenship Conference in D.C.

As a senior member she was named a county representative to the new 4-H 10-county council and helped to form the 4-H Junior Leadership Club and the 4-H Automotive Club in Monroe County.

After she retired from teaching, Janice returned to Albia. She was elected to the Monroe County Extension Council and has served almost 12 years. She is a member of the county 4-H foundation board. She became a fair judge and enjoys talking with 4-Hers about their fair exhibits. She spends one day of the Monroe County Fair typing the recipes for the food exhibits into a fair recipe book that is sold at the fair and throughout the year.

She also still gets the thrill of exhibiting by entering many items in the open class show. She wrote a series of articles for the Albia Newspapers about Extension and Outreach to inform the public about many of 4-H’s activities.

Janice attributes many of her successes in life to skills she learned, people she worked with, and experiences she had in 4-H.
