Alfred “Earl” Stafford, 77, of Lawrence, Kan., died on Friday, Dec. 9, 2016 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence. He was born on March 29, 1939 in Blakesburg, to Lloyd Adolphus and Florence Helen (Fisher) Stafford.

Earl was a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army, serving tours in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He also served as Army recruiter in Kansas City before his retirement with the rank of Master Sergeant. After his retirement from the military, he worked for several companies in management, including Scott Laundry in Lawrence, Ecolab Pest Management, Oak Furniture Store and also drove a school bus for the Lawrence School District.

He married Katherine “Kate” Ann Lennie on Dec. 23, 1958. Kate preceded him in death on June 12, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Tammi; a grandson, Brandon; a brother, Richard Stafford and sister-in-law, Donna Stafford.

Survivors include two sons, Keith (Karen) of Nashville, Tenn., and Jeffery Scott of Lawrence; a daughter, Kathleen (Michael) Mitchell; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, James (Karen) Stafford of Milton, Fla., Gary (Vivian) Stafford of Albia and Robert (Dianna) Stafford of Monroe; three sisters, Eileen (Elmer) Davis of Albia, Donna (Mike) Dinneen of North Port, Fla., and Pauline (Pat) Hendron of Thomaston, Ga.,; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial of cremains with military honors will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, at 3 p.m., at Eslinger Cemetery in Monroe County.
