Joseph Sullivan, age 79, born in Albia, and currently residing in Minneapolis, Minn., died of a sudden illness while traveling with his wife in September. Joe was a chemical engineer who retired after 25 years as Ciba-Geigy Corporation Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors, responsible for the industrial divisions. After, he taught Chemical Engineering for several years at Virginia Tech, then returned to the University of Minnesota Chemical Engineering Department as a lab instructor.
Survived by his wife Marcia of 54 years; three sons Mike (Katey), Paul (Hannah), and Dan (Meg); 11 grandchildren; and siblings Maureen, Marge, Pauline, Vince, Bob, and Bernard.
Joe's lifelong passions were family and education. Joe was a devoted and proud husband, father, and grandparent, who enjoyed traveling with family and friends. An Albia High graduate (1958), he was grateful for the opportunities to earn a Bachelor of Science at Iowa State University and a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota and took full advantage of the opportunities that his education provided. In turn, after a long career in industry, he passed on the benefits of his life experience to students as a Professor at Virginia Tech, a lab instructor at the University of Minnesota, and, most recently, in retirement, as a tutor at Minneapolis Community & Technical College.
Among his hobbies were travel, grandchild and wildlife photography, bicycle riding, and following sports, particularly the Iowa State Cyclones, Virginia Tech Hokies and Minnesota Twins. Family and friends will particularly miss his engaging conversations and the warmly told stories of his and others' life experiences.
Memorials preferred to the Uttley-Sullivan Family Scholarship at Minneapolis Community & Technical College or the Sullivan Scholarship in Chemical and Biological Engineering at Iowa State University.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, 11 a.m., at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church (Minneapolis) with reception following. Visitation will begin at 10am.
