Janet “Jan” Ann Bell, 75, of Sperry and formerly of Melrose, died at 3:12 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 21, 1942 in Melrose, she was the daughter of George and Margaret (Stone) Besco. On Sept. 7, 1985 she married the love of her life, Robert D. “Bob” Bell. He died April 21, 2013.

Jan graduated from Albia Community High School in 1960. She went to Ottumwa Beauty Academy that summer to study cosmetology. After graduation she got a job at the Beauty Bar on Washington St. in Burlington in April 1961. She won her first trophy in hair design in 1962 at Kansas City.

Her first marriage was in 1964 at St. John’s on Division St., in Burlington and from this union two children were born, a daughter, Seanne in Burlington, and a son, David in Rock Island, Ill. They divorced. She was a stay at home mother until the children were 10 and 8 years of age. She worked for NRB (National Research Bureau) from 1974 to 1980. She then went to work for Riley, Jones & Aspelmeier Law Firm from 1980 to 1986. She worked for Des Moines County for 17 ½ years under three different auditors, retiring Dec. 31, 2003. In 2007 to 2011 she came back to fill in at the County Assessor’s office.

She was a former member of BPW where she held the position of secretary for two years. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed auctions, bingo, going to casinos, all crafting, and spending time with family and with friends on road trips. Like her father, she never met a stranger.

Survivors include one daughter, Seanne (Wally) West of New London; one son, David Hausner of the Quad Cities; two sisters, Joan (Lee) VanZee of Des Moines and Kathleen (Carl) Rominger of Albia; five granddaughters, Jamie (Daniel) Pringle, Heidi (Seth Gipple) Calvin, Kayla (Christopher) Harkless, Whitney (Daniel) Kinney, Kaysi (Gabe) Burden; eight great-grandchildren, Chloe, Skyler and Aiden Pringle, Kaylee and Karter Calvin, Bucannon and Logan Harkless and Ava Kinney; nieces and nephews; one paternal aunt, Avene Nolte of Minnesota; many special friends and classmates who were very dear to Jan…Blessings to all until you meet on the other side.

The memorial funeral service for Jan will be 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of the service.

A memorial has been established for Des Moines County Big Hollow.

Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
