Dorothy Pauline McDonald, age, 98 of Albia, passed away Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia.

Dorothy was born on July 31, 1919 to Fred and Muriel (Martin) Anderson in Chariton. Dorothy was the youngest of nine siblings, many of who she cared for later in life. She grew up and graduated from Chariton High School with the Class of 1937. After high school she attended a year of college at Simpson in Indianola. On Aug. 16, 1945 she was united in marriage to Carl McDonald. To this union four children were born, John, Mary Jo, Susan and Tom. Dorothy and Carl shared 20 years of marriage together until his passing on March 16, 1966.

Dorothy worked in the kitchen at the VA hospital in Knoxville during WWII. She then took a job at Goode Seed and Feed where she worked for 20 years. In her younger years she volunteered as a leader of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Albia since 1951. She enjoyed cooking, especially caramel Chex and bacon and eggs for her grandchildren, playing solitaire, and watching the birds visit the feeders at her house. Her real joy in life was spending time with her family and friends.

Dorothy is survived by her children, John (Nancy) McDonald of Albia, Mary Jo (Scott) Mills of Gainesville, Ga., Susan (Larry) Denner of Cedar Falls and Tom (Joann) McDonald of Albia; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Muriel; her husband Carl McDonald; a grandson, Rodney Hope; four brothers, Thomas, Gerald, Glenn and Raymond Anderson; and four sisters, Irene Anderson, Agatha Boothe, Nancy Rose, and Lois Ambelang.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at The First Christian Church in Albia, with Pastor Lynda Carlson officiating. Burial will follow the service at Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation will be held 1-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 30, 2017, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Dorothy’s family present from 6-8 p.m., Thursday evening to greet family and friends.

A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church in Albia.
