I was happy to return home from seven days in Alaska just to read a newspaper again. I grabbed the Seattle Times a minute after I walked off the boat, found a Denver Post at the Denver Airport and started flipping through the Des Moines Registers I had missed while I was gone.

I know, I know, I’m a media dinosaur.

Sunday I read carefully a piece by former Iowa Lt. Gov. and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge on how her Democrat Party needs to win back middle America. In knowing Patty for over 30 years, virtually everything she does is reasoned and reasonable.

Some of her points had me nodding in agreement. Tariffs being a negative factor on agriculture most definitely made me listen. She used the word “progressive” instead of “liberal” not unlike the word change from “global warming” to “climate change.” The sound of her message was not shrill or filled with the kind of acrimony and hatred many on the left have used to not only excoriate Donald Trump, but George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan before him.

Then I turned back to the editorial Page 1 and started reading Reka Basu, who also calls herself a “progressive” but writes with near hysterical hatred of the President. Where Patty Judge knows rural Iowans and knows they aren’t stupid, Basu is the poster girl for Hillary Clinton’s “deplorables” label of everyone in fly-over country. Basu would applaud Opray Winfrey and her new “Shout Your Abortion” movement where abortion is to be normalized. So much for Democrats of another era suggesting abortion should be legal, safe and rare.

Basu was calling Trump a dictator and comparing him to Stalin for his criticism of the press and what he calls again and again “fake news.” It’s not fake,” whines Basu, this while major newspapers across the United States ran the same story about the illegal immigrant arrested by I.C.E. who was taking his wife to the hospital to have their fifth child and each leaving out completely or burying the fact that the guy was wanted on an outstanding warrant for murder.

Basu and her fellow radicalized progressives support sanctuary cities where U.S. law is routinely ignored, I.C.E. agents are cast as villains and war criminals and unchecked immigration where criminals from other countries routinely enter the U.S. and blend into society.

She rails against some sort of yet unknown power grab on the First Amendment all the while Google and Twitter have been caught red-handed censoring conservatives of all kinds and liberal politicians roundly ignore Christian pastors being held in Muslim countries for years and the wholesale attack on religious freedom within the United States. Not to mention “progressive” universities who routinely censor conservative speakers on campus.

She would applaud NFL players kneeling for the National Anthem and criticize any Christian who would kneel in prayer in a public place. It is this kind of progressive fanaticism that cheers the banning of plastic straws when there is zero evidence that plastic straws have any effect on the environment. It is the kind of muddled thinking that couldn’t possibly criticize New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for saying “America was never great,” but hopes for Donald Trump’s assassination or untimely death because he speaks out against illegal immigration. They despise the very words “Make America Great Again.”

And that is the problem. Rural Americans, by and large, don’t think the way East and West Coach Progressives think. It is true, we actually like our guns and religion, except when a rural American admits that, it isn’t dripping with Barack Obama condescension. And unlike the conservative movement in the U.S. that is forced to come to terms with skinheads, clansmen and right wing nut jobs, the left wing crazies have taken over any vestige of a Democratic Party that once embraced blue collar working families and their traditional values.

Not that Donald Trump lives by traditional American values. But he has proven with measurable actions that he respects those values and will work to protect them.

And this is the challenge for convincing middle America to turn back to the Democrat Party. You’ve got to convince us that (despite all proven modern scientific evidence) that unborn life is of little value. Against evidence that illegal immigration is harmful in terms of crime, they’ve got to convince us that nations can exist without borders and that the American taxpayer should be on the hook for everyone’s health care and education. They’ve got to convince us that the faith of the Old and New Testaments must be replaced by the religion of global warming and force us to accept an orthodoxy that places plant and animal life above human activity.

At two percent unemployment, a steady stock market and progress being made in new trade deals throughout the world despite tariff concerns, one must remember the words of the Progressive Prophet Bill Clinton: “It’s the economy stupid.” And the economy, at this point, is pretty good.

I’m not sure how the illegal status of Cristhian Rivera plays into his admitted murder of Mollie Tibbetts, but it is a fact. It is a fact that Rivera entered the U.S. illegally five to seven years ago, by his own admission it is a fact that he killed the young Brooklyn woman. It is a fact that he is Mexican. And it is a fact that Mollie Tibbetts would be alive today had Rivera never crossed the U.S. border illegally or had been identified and deported.

It’s also a fact that most abductions and murders committed in the U.S. are committed by U.S. citizens.

The ACLU, another bastion of progressive thinking, is making it a race issue, taking exception immediately to Gov. Kim Reynolds, Senators Grassley and Ernst and President Trump in calling out the illegal immigration status. But it’s not about race. It’s about legal status and the difficulty U.S. authorities have in tracking potential problems when millions live off the grid.

Mexican or Bosnian or European, we didn’t know who this guy was and had no chance of figuring out what he was capable of doing.
