Fear God, keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. Ecclesiastes 12:13

Every human being searches for meaning and purpose in life. Lots of folks never find it. They chase after things that accumulate for them but they never really fid fulfillment and happiness. In his own pursuit, Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, finds that earthy goals, those that do not lead to God- bring only dissatisfaction, frustration and uncertainty. I see it all the time.

There was a great American businessman by the name of James Cash, J.C. Penney, and he came to a similar conclusion. I remember when I was a little boy seeing a picture of the great man and founder of the retail chain in every Penney’s store. Through his hard work and thrifty management, he built one of America’s great franchises. But during the Great Depression, heavy financial losses caused him tremendous stress, which led to his hospitalization with a life threatening illness. He thought he was going to die and so he wrote a farewell letter to his wife and son. When he awoke the next morning, he went for a walk down the hallway of the hospital and heard singing from the Chapel. Heavy hearted, he went in and listened. The song, “God Will Take Care of You” spoke to him deeply.

It was in that moment that Penney discovered that God actually was there to help. “From that day on,” he said, “my life has been free from worry.” Penney had found not only the Lord, but that the Lord was always with Him and was there to help him and shower him in His love and care. That love of God was the key to all of life.

Penney remained a devout Christian and though many do not know his story, God did, because He helped write it. In our day and age, people do chase after the wind. It is little wonder that so many are unhappy and the highest number of Americans ever are on anti depressants. We serve an awesome God and when we trust Him to help us and lead us and love us, we can find life’s true meaning and true fulfillment. Apart from Him, life is mundane at best and wasted at worst. In these waning few weeks of summer, find renewal of your spirit and renew your relationship with the Lord. It will be the best thing you can do for yourself and your happiness.
