A lot of people didn’t give Albia much hope against a surging Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont baseball team on Saturday night in the first round of district play.

But the 8-21 Blue Demons showed incredible grit and determination, holding off the Rockets until the final bat of the bottom of the seventh inning.

Albia tied the game 1-1 in the third inning on a score by Jaden Hugen on a Luke Bossard hit after EBF had opened the scoring in the second. Albia jumped ahead in the third with RBI hits by Hunter DeMoss, Robertson Jameson and Nathan Crall.

The Rockets scored two in the fifth against sophomore starter Tien Thiravong, but were shut out in the sixth, trailing 4-3 going into the final inning.

EBF scored two in the seventh to win the game.

DeMoss led Albia with three hits and an RBI. Robertson had two hits, including a double, an RBI and a stolen base. Crall had an RBI single and scored and Nathaniel Wynn singled.

The Blue Demons graduate just three seniors off the team including Gage Wilson, Crall and Eddison Goodlow.

Thiravong went six and a third innings, giving up five runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Barrett Bonnett iptched a third inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeouts.

For the Rockets, Jared McCrea got the win with an inning and two thirds of relief work. He had a walk. Wyatt Klyn wen tthree innings, giving up four runs on two hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Adam LaRue went two and a third with two hits, a walk and three strikeouts.

All six Rocket hits were singled. Kalen Walker had two hits including an RBI and two stolen bases. Jaden Herr and Austin Johnson each had RBI singles and Jared McCrea and Klyn had singles.
