The Albia Blue Demon wrestling team finished third at the Nebraska Team Camp, beating a combined team from Harland, Iowa and Cache, Okla., 24-9. The only losses were to Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 59-21 and Valley of West Des Moines, 42-19.
“We started training for the camp on June 1 and there were several kids that didn’t miss a practice, which says an awful lot about their dedication to get better,” said Coach Dave Wenger. “We took out one of the youngest teams that I’ve ever taken out there before with only two being upperclassmen, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect. As the week progressed, our guys gained a ton of confidence, but more importantly, I really think that they came together as a group.
“We made huge improvements as the week went on,” he said. “We will continue to work on specific things that we need to improve on as the summer progresses, however, I think last week will go a long ways in regards to getting us where we need to be as a dual team in the upcoming season.”
