The Monroe County Senior League Softball All-Star team traveled to the Grandview Little League Complex in Des Moines last Saturday and Sunday to compete in the 2012 Iowa Girls State Tournament. The girls went 1-2 in the tournament, defeating Davenport East in the opening round, before falling to eventual champions Boone and then to Davenport East in the elimination game on Sunday.
In game one against Davenport East, outstanding team defense gave starting pitcher Ellie Wenger tremendous support as she threw a stellar complete game 2 hitter. Wenger gave up three runs and struck out five batters while walking four on the day.
At the plate, Lauren Williams went 3-4 with two singles and a double. She also scored one run and drove in two, leading the way to a 6-3 Monroe County victory in the opening round.
In game two, Lauren Williams scored four runs and Rechelle Hindman scored two to lead the Monroe County offense in a marathon 23-11 loss to Boone. Sarah Clark and Julianna Teno shared in the pitching duties. The loss sent the team to the consolation side of the bracket to once again face Davenport East, who eliminated Grandview Little League in a thrilling 5 run inning in the bottom of the 7th to keep their hopes alive.
