Sherryl Mae Rowe qualified as an individual for the state girls cross country meet, finishing 9th overall. The top 15 in districts qualify as individuals.

In a great team effort, the Albia Lady Dee cross country team finished 6th out of 15 at the state qualifying meet in Panora on Thursday, Oct. 24. They were led by Sherryl Mae Rowe who, for the second time in as many years, qualified for the state meet in Fort Dodge with her ninth place finish in a time of 21:33.

“Sherryl Mae had a great run tonight. She is such an intelligent runner,” said Coach Todd Ratliff. “She maintains her composure and just moves up towards the front as the race unfolds. I am so happy that she punched her ticket to Fort Dodge again this year.”

Becca Pistek finished her six-year career as a Lady Dee runner with a 33rd place finish in a time of 23:46 to finish second for the team. “Watching Becca finish was bitter sweet,” said Coach Ratliff. “She has been a staple in our program for a long time. It is hard to imagine not having her run with us. I am grateful for what she has brought to the program.”

Brooke Smith finished in 36th in a time of 24:06. Allison Major finished in 24:12 in 39th place in the team scoring. “Brooke and Allison ran strong, and were solid again tonight as they have been all season,” said the coach.

Ellie and Emma Martin ran closely together throughout the meet, and finished in the same manner. Ellie in 24:46 and Emma in 24:48. “It is fun to watch these twins work hard together. They finished strong and kept their time in the 28s,” he said.

Senior Ava Brown also worked hard throughout the meet in a time of 25:06 for a 61st place finish. “Having Ava out for cross country again this year was a blessing. I am glad that she finished her career with a good race today,” Coach Ratliff said.

“Looking at the team finish of 6th place was really pretty good. On paper it looked as if maybe we should be around 9th. It was a great year as a team, the finishing record, including districts was a stout 81-41.

Finishing first on the night was Adair Casey-Guthrie Center 61, Emmetsburg 92, Chariton 95, Panorama 108, Shenandoah 118, Albia 169, Clarinda 186, DSM Christian 215, Treynor 224, Red Oak 237, Greene County 272, Central Decatur 294, West Central Valley 311, and no team score for Missouri Valley and Underwood.
