The Albia Lady Dees took the first step down the post season road Wednesday night by defeating Chariton 3-0 in Albia.
Albia opened with a 25-13 win. Ellie Spurgin served the Lady Dees to a 5-0 lead knocking down four aces and after a point by the Lady Chargers Abbie Martin stepped to the service line to put up eight more points to leave Albia with a 13-1 lead. The Lady Chargers fought back as Avery Hall served them to a three point run but Albia was able to build a 19-6 advantage. Chariton outscored the Lady Dees down the stretch 7-6 but it was too little too late.
In the second game the Chargers scored the first point only to have Abbey Griffin hit a rocket spike for Albia and Spurgin went to the service line and Albia went on a 4-0 run to lead 4-1. The teams traded points but with 4-3 showing on the scoreboard Tanae Thiravong hit an ace serve that led to a nine point surge that included three aces. After a bad pass led to a Lady Charger point a block by Jenna Gronewold sent Emma Wenger to the service line for an ace serve. Albia went on a four point run. With the score 22-10 Chariton’s Lexi Smyer hit two ace serves but the spark was put out by a kill by Griffin and Albia went on to a 25-15 win.
Spurgin got Albia off to a strong start with four ace serves in game three. With the score 7-2 Avery Hall led the four point comeback halted by a nifty dink by Griffin. The Lady Dees went on a seven point run. The teams traded points until an outside kill by Spurgin sparked the Lady Dees to an 8-2 run ending the match with a 25-10 score.
Albia recorded 17 ace serves in the match along with 40 kills and 37 assists. Individual results were as follows: Alex Beard hit 8/9 with five kills, 34 assists, five digs, 4/5 serving; Ashley Beary 2/2 serving; Abbey Griffin 31/38 with 18 kills, two assists, seven digs, 12/13 with two aces; Jenna Gronewold 12/13 with seven kills, three digs, 1/1 serving; Meghan Jones 2/2 with one kill; Abbie Martin six digs, 9/10 with two aces; Ellie Spurgin 14/18 with seven kills, 21/22 with eight aces; Tanae Thiravong 4/5 with two kills, one dig, 12/13 with three aces; Sophie Waber 4/5 hitting; Emma Wenger one assist, two digs, 7/8 with two aces.
The Lady Dees improve to 29-7 on the season and move on to play Davis County at home on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
