The Albia Lady Dee volleyball team took step number two in the post season by defeating Davis County 3-1 in the Regional semi final on Tuesday night in Albia.

The Lady Dees won the opener in workman-like fashion 25-17. Two early kills by the Mustangs gave them a 1-2 lead but a kill by Abbey Griffin, dink by Alex Beard and an ace serve by Tanae Thiravong put Albia on the right path and they never lost the advantage. Davis County made a comeback effort with the score 15-8 as the Lady Dees missed on a serve, putting Mustang Brett Lough on the line and she was able to cut the margin to 16-16 but Albia went on a 7-2 run and finally an outside kill by Ellie Spurgin sealed the victory.

In game two the Mustangs made good on their comeback bid. Early in the set Albia edged into the lead but took command with the score 8-6 putting up seven points in a row. A net serve gave the ball back to the Mustangs and DC started to make a move.

Two ace serves by Kayla Joos cut the margin to 15-9 before Spurgin hit an outside kill. A block by the Mustangs moved the momentum needle into the Davis County court. They were able to take advantage of some Lady Dee errors and great play at the net to outscore Albia 9-2 to tie the game 20-20. A kill by Griffin, a dink by Beard, a well-played ball by Griffin put Albia up 23-20. An outside kill, a block and a bad pass by Albia tied the game at 23-23 and two ace serves won the game for the Mustangs.

Albia was off to a shaky start in game three but with the score 5-4 a block by Jenna Gronewold and two missed kills by the Mustangs gave the Lady Dees some breathing room. With the score 15-12 Tanae Thiravong went to the service line and stayed there until Albia held a 20-12 advantage. Davis County had a three point run but Albia was able to secure the side out after a long volley. An ace serve by Griffin and three kills outside the lines by the Mustangs ended with an Albia victory.

Game four was complete domination by the Lady Dees. They started with a three point run, increased the lead to 11-5 and when Emma Wenger went to the service line Albia quickly went to 14-6. Later Wenger hit an ace serve to make it 17-9 and when Griffin nailed a back row kill Albia ended the match 25-15.

Albia’s 37 kills and 10 ace serves led to a convincing victory over SCC rival. Individual results were as follows: Alex Beard hit 10/10 with four kills, 24 assists, nine digs, served 9/9 with one ace; Ashley Beary 4/4 with one kill, three digs, 3/4 serving; Abbey Griffin 51-62 with 19 kills, one assist, 12 digs, one block, 16/19 with five aces; Jenna Gronewold 14/15 with four kills, one dig, one block; Addison Halstead 0/1 hitting; Abbie Martin 1/1 hitting, two assists, 15 digs, 12/12 serving; Ellie Spurgin 11/13 with four kills, two assists, 10 digs, 5/7 with one ace; Sophie Waber 4/6 with one ace, four assists, three digs; Emma Wenger 1/2 with one kill, two assists, seven digs, 24/24 with two aces.

Albia improves to 29-9 on the season and will travel to Washington Iowa to face West Liberty in the regional finals on Monday, Nov. 4.
