The Albia Blue Demon basketball team hit the floor with the motor running hot as they started the 2019-20 season with a 65-42 victory over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Friday night in Albia.

The Blue Demons rode the hot hand of Brayden Messamaker, who hit two three-point goals, a two- point goal and a free throw to lead Albia to a 19-1 first quarter edge. All five starters scored in the period as the Albia defense stifled the Rocket offense.

The Rockets were able to bounce back in the second quarter outscoring Albia 15-14, capitalizing on inside play by Logan McCrea. Messamaker dropped in a three early on but strong free throw shooting kept the Rockets at bay until the half and the teams hit the locker room with Albia holding a 33-16 advantage.

The Blue Demons came out on fire in the second half putting up 18 points while holding EBF to single digits. Messamaker dropped in two from outside the arc and Jackson DeMoss hit one while Nate Wynn chipped in five points mainly from inside the painted area.

Leading 51-25, the Blue Demons were able to secure the victory even though EBF outscored Albia 17-14 in the final period. Messamaker and Garin Grinstead each hit three point goals for Albia while Blake Chance, Joe Teno, Jackson DeMoss and Trey Griffin each added field goals. Aiden Yates hit a three for EBF while Jared McCrea scored inside for the Rockets who also hit six free throws in the quarter.

Messamaker led all scorers with 21 points while Joe Teno added 12. Chance had four, Blake Stewart two, Wynn eight, DeMoss seven, Drew Chance two, Trey Griffin two, Jackson Pence four and Grinstead three. Blake Chance led the team with seven assists while Messamaker, Teno, Wynn and DeMoss each had two. Travis Sheffield, Trey Griffin, Liam Winfield, Stewart and Pence had one apiece.

Messamaker had seven rebounds, Sheffield one, DeMoss two, Griffin two, Winfield one, Blake Chance two, Wynn five, Stewart three, Teno four, Pence five, and Drew Chance four. DeMoss had five steals, Wynn two while Blake Chance, Messamaker, Wynn, Pence and Drew Chance each had one. Stewart had two blocked shots.

The Blue Demons will take their 1-0 record to Chariton on Tuesday and host Centerville on Friday.
