The Albia Lady Dee volleyball team refused to go quietly into the off season but into the off season they went as Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont eliminated Albia from the post season with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night in Eddyville.

In set number one the Lady Dees took an early lead as the Rockets miss hit on the first kill and MaKenna Ross dropped in a kill to make it 2-0. Later a block by Abbey Griffin gave Albia a 4-3 advantage. Taylor Caves started a four-point run with a kill. Torie Alexander had two ace serves in the run.

Albia fought back later as Alex Beard went to the service line and ended a five-point run with two aces giving the Lady Dees a 10-9 lead. Both teams were able to make plays resulting in a 15-15 tie but the Rockets managed to stay one point ahead even through a great rally that Albia finally scored on to make it 22-19 and despite a great back row kill by Hannah Isley until the Lady Dees succumbed 25-21.

Set two was equally spirited. Albia scored first on a push by the Rockets, a kill by Jade Van Polen and a mishit by the Rockets gave Albia a 3-0 lead.

A dig by EBF resulted in a point and an ace serve by Grace Roberts made it 3-2 but a mishit and an ace serve by Isley restored the margin 5-2. EBF went on a four point spurted accented by a great middle block but a errant serve tied the game at 6-6. A kill by Rocket Torie Alexander put EBF in the lead and a run including two double hits by the Lady Dees eventually gave the Rockets a 10-6 advantage.

A kill by Griffin ended the run and the teams traded points until a kill by Van Polen sparked a 5-1 spurt by Albia that tied the game at 16-16. Kills by Ellie Spurgin and Van Poen gave Albia an 18-16 advantage but consecutive kills by Alexander, an error by Albia and a kill by Taylor Caves gave EBF a 23-19 margin.

Van Polen ended the run of points with a kill and a kill by Ross and a double hit by EBF drew Albia close at 23-21. A missed serve gave EBF a 24-22 advantage but a dink by Griffin made it 24-22 but a net serve gave EBF the victory 25-22.

In the final set EBF started with a three point run before a block by Albia made it 3-1. Isley hit a shot from the back row to make it 3-2 but another three point run by EBF put Albia behind 6-2.

The Rockets missed on a kill but were able to regain the serve and aided by ace serves by Emma Davis they built a 10-5 lead. After a hitting error the Rockets used an effective game at the net as well as three ace serves by Grace Roberts to build an 18-7 advantage. Though Albia’s Griffin had a kill, an ace serve and a block down the stretch the Lady Dees were unable to stage a comeback and lost the set and the match 25-14.

Alex Beard hit 7/7 with one kill, served 17/18 with one ace, had 12 digs and 13 assists; Griffin hit 27/32 with nine kills, served 5/7 with one ace and had four digs and four blocks; Isley hit 4/5 with two kills, served 6/8 with one ace, had one assist, eight digs and one block; Abbie Martin served 5/5 and had 10 digs; Maddy Persons had one dig; Ross hit 12/14 with five kills, served 2/3 and had one dig; Ellie Spurgin hit 10/12 with one kill, served 7/9 and had six assists and eight digs; Van Polen hit 14/23 with four kills, served 6/7 and had four digs and one block.

Albia ends the season with a record of 10-23 and 2-4 in conference play.

“ It was a great first round win for us tonight,” said EBF Coach Gladys Genskow. “It was good to get that first game under your belt and build upon that.  We played pretty well considering we normally don’t play that well at home, but we did what we needed to do for the win.”

The Rockets continue regional play next Tuesday night against Davis County.
