Led by sophomore Carter Anderson’s championship at 106, the Albia wrestling team moved six wrestlers into the district tournament at Knoxville this Saturday.
“We had a solid day,” said Coach Dave Wenger. “Obviously, we would have liked to qualify all of our guys, but at the end of the day, we were fairly pleased with the way that things turned out.”
They don’t give outstanding wrestler awards, but if they did Carter Anderson’s performance would have rated as one of the best of the day at any weight. The sophomore (33-2) pinned Tyler Schutt (22-15) of EBF in 1:28 and Marco Alejo (29-11), Knoxville in :55 for first place.
At 113 Dawson Bonnett (17-8) scored a tech fall over Chris Brown (14-13) 16-0 in 4:00. He lost in the championshiop round to Caydn Hall (31-10), EBF by pin with one tick left on the clock, and there was no wrestleback to let Bonnett earn a spot in the district tournament.
Albia’s strength in the lower weights continued as Brodie Conner (24-10) at 120 finished second. He scored a major decision over Jax Mosley (17-13) of Centerville 11-1 and was pinned by Luke Spaur (27-4) of Knoxville in 1:37. There was no wrestleback and Conner moved on in second place.
Albia’s third runner-up came at 138 where Michael Thomas (22-3) scored a 6-3 decision over Tate Ricard (29-8) of EBF 6-3, then narrowly lost to Nathaniel Genobana (25-1) of Centerville 2-1. There was no wrestleback and Thomas moves on to districts.
Barrett Bonnett at 145 was extremely close to a championship. Bonnett (30-7) pinned Zach Young (4-12) of Chariton in :34, beat Gage Moorman (30-13) of Centerville by major decision 10-0, lost 11-5 to Trestin Sales (40-2) of EBF, then pinned Koby Gordon (23-18) of Knoxville to finish second.
Gavin Shaw (12-21) at 170 punched his ticket to the district tournament starting with a pin over Seth Kargol (18-20) of EBF in 3:36. He lost by pin to Gavin Montalvo (20-6), Knoxville and there was no wrestleback, letting Shaw finish second.
There were some close finishes that just fell short of districts. At 126 Logan Carter (11-5) pinned Jessica Guerrero (5-16) of Clarke in :17, lost a heart-breaker to Gabe Gordon (27-8) of Knoxville 3-0, beat Devin Adams (23-21), Central Decatur 13-7, but didn’t get to wrestleback, finishing third.
At 152 Stephen Conley (18-16) pinned Metzli Yanez (3-9), Clarke, in 1:03 before losing a 7-1 decision to Hunter McFadden (26-3) EBF. Conley topped Zander Reed (21-20) of Central Decatur 4-3 in overtime but didn’t get to wrestleback, finishing third.
At 160 Eli Zanoni (17-11) finished fourth. He lost by pin to Alan Angle (33-8) of EBF and fell to David Walker (20-14), Central Decatur.
At 132 Joey Pearson (3-14) finished sixth losing by fall to Levi Vandonsler (13-19) of EBF and by fall to Drake Entrekin (2-12) of Chariton in 3:30.
At 182 Devin Kimball (7-13) finished fifth, losing by pin to Wyatt Darnell (19-15) in 3:26, then picking up two byes.
Kaleb Sample (5-20) did not place, losing to Colton Champoux (8-12) of EBF by fall in 3:18 and to Steben Metcalf (2-5) of Knoxville in :11.
“As we look forward to next Saturday in Knoxville, we will really focus on each wrestler individually to give them the things they need to transfer on to the following week,” said Coach Wenger. “It’s really no secret as to what each of them have to do. We just have to make sure to have them properly prepared both from a physical and mental standpoint. That is what we will focus on as the week progresses.”
