Win over Davis County

On Friday night in Albia the Blue Demons defeated Davis County 51-36.

The opening quarter was evenly matched with Albia outscoring the Mustangs 13-12 but the Blue Demons broke the game open in the second quarter by shutting down the Mustang offense completely scoring 16 points and allowing none to go to halftime with a 29-12 advantage. Blake Chance hit 12 points in the opening 16 minutes on two three point goals, two field goals and two free throws while Braydon Messamaker hit three from outside the arc.

Davis County came out of the locker room with new resolve and outscored Albia 15-13 in the third quarter and each scored nine points in the fourth period but Albia was comfortably under control throughout the second half.

Chance led the team in scoring with 20 points while Messamaker had 12. Nathan Crall added eight points, Nate Wynn eight, Carson Stocker two, and Blake Stewart one. Crall had three assists, Chance two, while Beau Leshen, Dawson Hermsen, Wynn, and Joe Teno each had one.

Teno led the team in rebounding with seven, Leshen had five, Stewart four, Wynn three, Crall two, Chance two, and Stocker one. Chance had three steals, Messamaker two, Leshen one and Wynn one.

The Blue Demons improve to 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in the SCC. They will play at Pleasantville on Saturday night.

Win at Pleasantville

The Albia varsity boys’ basketball team squared off against the Trojans in Pleasantville on Saturday night and managed a 49-42 win.

Most of the first quarter was a struggle with the Blue Demons scoring only four points in the first six minutes, but a field goal and two three point goals in the final minute gave Albia a 12-11 lead at the buzzer. The Blue Demons managed the slim lead throughout the second period and went into halftime with a 26-22 advantage.

During the third quarter Albia managed to put some distance between themselves and the Trojans, mainly by flexing their defensive muscle, allowing only five points. Nine points by Blake Chance and a three point goal by Braydon Messamaker gave Albia 12 points and a 38-27 lead going into the final eight minutes. Though the Blue Demons were only four of seven from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, a three point goal by Joe Teno kept the Trojans at bay and secured the win.

Chance led all scorers with 27 points while Messamaker had 11. Teno had six, Nathan Crall three, and Nate Wynn two. Crall had three assists, Chance two, Dawsen Hermsen one, and Wynn one.

Chance led the team with seven rebounds, Wynn had six, Messamaker had five, Beau Leshen four, Teno four, and Crall two. Chance and Wynn each had two steals while Messamaker and Crall each had one.

Albia improves to 6-1 on the season and will travel to Washington on Thursday.
