Albia goes 2-1 at Oskaloosa, lose to #5 3A Winterset

The Albia Lady Dee softball team went 2-1 at the Oskaloosa Invitational on Saturday defeating South Hardin and Pella while losing a heartbreaker to Winterset.

The Lady Dees continued to swing the bats with confidence in the opener scoring 13 runs in four innings to defeat South Hardin of Eldora while Olivia Teno tossed a three-hit shutout. Teno struck out six and walking none in the 13-0 victory.

Albia scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second and six in the fourth. Alex Beard stroked two doubles and had three RBI while Samantha Grinstead added two RBI. Hannah Isley tripled, Teno singled, Kennedy Schroeder singled with an RBI, and MaKenna Jones singled. Makenna Ross walked and added an RBI.

One-run loss to Huskies

Albia dropped the second game 7-6 to the state’s number five Class 3A team in Winterset. Albia led the entire contest until the Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the victory.

The Lady Dees scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second and another in the fourth to lead 5-0. Winterset managed a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to make it 5-2. The Huskies tied the game with three runs in the sixth inning but Albia regained the lead in the seventh with a run. But Winterset sent two across the plate in the bottom half for the win.

Lawrence took the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits, striking out eight and walking three.

Offensively Ross doubled twice, singled and had two RBI; Alex Beard singled, homered, and had one RBI; Schroeder doubled and had one RBI; Leshen singled, doubled and had two RBI; Abby Martin singled. Samantha Grinstead scored a run.

“Three errors in the game hurt our cause but we lost to a very tough team,” said Coach Larry Achenbach.

Trounce Pella

The Lady Dee took their frustration out on Pella in the final game of the day outscoring the Lady Dutch 11-3, highlighted by a grand slam home run by Makenna Ross. Pella scored one in the first, the third and the fifth while Albia scored one run in the first inning, three in the second, three in the fifth and Ross hit the grand slam in the sixth.

Others adding to the offense included: Isley singled; Olivia Teno doubled and had two RBI; Beard doubled; Schroeder singled twice and had an RBI; Lawrence singled twice and had an RBI; Leshen singled; Ellie Spurgin singled twice and had two RBI; Erin Heaton singled; Taylor Colwell scored; Samantha Grinstead scored; and Jones scored.

Teno recorded the win from the pitcher’s circle allowing three runs on six hits, striking out one and walking none.

The Lady Dees finished the day 8-3 on the season and will travel to Chariton on Monday night.
