The Albia Lady Dee volleyball team struggled early in their final home match of the season but eventually won Thursday night’s contest 3-1.

The Lady Dees fell behind 1-7 in the opening set. Albia worked their way back to an 8-8 tie after two ace serves by Abbey Griffin but the Panthers edged into the lead again and maintained a three point margin until an ace serve by Ellie Spurgin tied the game at 17-17. Mt. Pleasant used ace serves and a strong game at the net to take a 19-24 lead and though Albia managed to cut the margin to 21-24, they were unable to hold off the Panthers who won 21-25.

Albia struggled in game two as well. Early on the Panthers took a 1-4 advantage. An ace serve by Spurgin and a powerful kill by Griffin knotted the game at 4-4 and again at 5-5. After six lead changes the Panthers began to pull away to a 12-16 edge. A kill by Griffin and two by Jenna Gronewold cut the deficit to 15-16, but Mt. Pleasant was unable to maintain the lead long, as kill attempts opened the door for the Lady Dees. An ace serve by Spurgin tied the game at 22-22. A kill by Sophie Waber and two by Griffin provided the 25-22 win.

The Lady Dees seemed to clean up some of the off hits and got their game on track in game three. Albia took an early 11-2 lead. Mt. Pleasant cut the margin to 14-9 but could get no closer and the Lady Dees won going away 25-15.

Albia got off to another slow start in game four falling behind 2-10. A block by Griffin seemed to enliven the Lady Dee efforts. Kills by Gronewold and Griffin and another block by Griffin cut the deficit to 8-12. Alex Beard scored on a dink to make it 11-14 but the Panthers went on a five point run. Mt. Pleasant held on to the margin until a net serve sent Emma Wenger to the service line. It was all Griffin from that point. Albia scored eight straight points with Griffin hitting pay dirt on five kills while Beard provided a block-beating dink as well.

Individual results are as follows: Alex Beard 19/22 with eight kills, 33 assists, 12 digs, 9/9 serving; Ashley Beary 5/5 with one ace; Griffin 34/44 with 20 kills, two assists, 26 digs, one block, 16/16 with three aces; Jenna Gronewold 29/34 with seven kills, four digs, one block, 3/4 serving; Abbie Martin 1/1 hitting, three assists, seven digs, 12/15 with two aces; Spurgin 30/38 with nine kills, three assists, 14 digs, one block 16/17 with three three aces; Tanae Thiravong 8/10 with two kills, one assist, one dig, 2/2 serving; Sophie Waber 15/18 with four kills, two digs; Emma Wenger two assists, 16 digs, 25/27 with two aces.

Albia improves to 22-4 and competed at the Davis County Invitational on Saturday in Bloomfield. Full results will be in Thursday’s U-R.
