The Albia Lady Dees pulled a major upset in Class 2A volleyball on Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over Davis County in Bloomfield. The Lady Dees were 0-3 against the Mustangs this season, losing 2-0 on Sept. 11 in tournament play, 3-2 on Sept. 25 in SCC play and 2-0 on Oct. 6 in tournament play.
The sets gyrated back and forth. Davis County won the first set 25-23 with the Dees suffering 12 missed serves. Albia captured the second set 27-25 after being down 15-2. That comeback was energized by the serving of Abbey Griffin, who was 23-24 serving with seven aces, many of them coming in set #2.
Then there were two blowouts. Davis County beat Albia 25-12, but the Lady Dees returned the favor with a 25-15 win in set four.
In the final set, the Dees eeked out a thrilling 15-13 victory.
Ellie Spurgin also ignited the Albia offense with excellent serving, going 17-17. Halle Hindman was 18-20 with two aces.
Albia’s hitting was solid with Griffin scoring 19 kills and Spurgin 13. Alex Beard had five kills from her setting position.
Abbie Martin, Griffin and Maddy Persons came up with key digs with 23, 14 and 12 respectively. “Maddy’s play doesn’t really show up in the statistics, but she was very good on the night,” said Coach Missy Dustin-Cox.
Davis County served at a 96 percent clip in the match led by Shelby Molykowski, 23-23 with four aces. But the Mustangs struggled with their attacking offense, making 25 errors against 39 kills in 120 attack attempts.
“I think our win at Eddyville on Monday really helped us regain our confidence,” said Coach Dustin Cox. “We played a lot more relaxed and didn’t melt when the pressure came our way.”
The Dees (16-17) move on to play Central Lee (23-9) at Donnelson on Tuesday.
