The Albia girls tennis team participated in the SCC Tournament on May 9 in Knoxville. The Lady Panthers won the team event followed by Clarke County, Chariton, Davis County, Centerville and Albia.
Alex Griggs of Knoxville won the singles title. For Albia, Kennedy Schroeder won her first round match 3-6, 6-1, 1-0, lost in the second round to Davis County, won 10-4 in the consolation bracket, only to lose to Centerville. Lauren Kaldenberg lost in the first round 7-5, 6-1 and was matched against Schroeder in the consolation bracket.
In doubles, the team from Clarke won the championship. For Albia Collette Teno and Sarah Herz lost in the first round, won their first match in the consolation bracket 10-6, won the second match 10-4 and took fifth place with a 10-8 victory. Mollie Solinger and Staci Etcher lost the first round match 6-3, 6-3 and lost in the consolation bracket 10-4.
On Saturday May 11 the Lady Dees went to Fairfield for the district Tournament losing to favorite Fairfield in their opening match.
“I thought the girls were playing their best tennis down the stretch, “ said Coach Justin Huber. “Fairfield has a great squad and we gave them some good matches even in a losing effort.”
The Lady Dees will finished the season at Grinnell on Saturday at theregional Tournament facing the best competition of the year with Grinnell winning the team competition. In singles Schroeder won 13 games in her division for third and Kaldenberg won 13 games as well to take third in her bracket. Neither moved on.
In doubles Herz and Teno won seven games for fourth in their bracket while Etcher and Solinger won five for fourth.
“I thank the seniors for their leadership this spring,” said Coach Huber, “Staci Etcher, Sarah Herz, Mollie Solinger and Collette Teno did a great job leading our team and making the season a joy.”
