Albia, EBF named to all-state softball teams

The South Central Conference was richly rewarded by Iowa softball coaches in selecting the 2017 All-State teams.

Albia placed two players on the Class 3A first team and one on the second. Hannah Isley, a junior, was a first team pick, hitting .466 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI, playing a solid second base for the Lady Dees.

Jena Lawrence, a freshman, was also a first team pick, batting .407 with 28 RBI and compiling a 22-8 pitching record with an ERA of 2.04 and an opponent’s batting average of .175. She struck out 253 and walked 65.

Her battery mate, freshman Alex Beard, earned second team All-State honors at catcher. She batted .380 with seven homeruns, 17 doubles and 39 RBI.

For Class 2A runner-up Eddyville-Blakesburg, Tony Fenton was named Class 2A Coach of the Year. Three Rockets made the Class 2A first team. Haegen Boyer, a senior shortstop, batted .429 with 15 home runs, 59 RBI and 11 doubles. Her shortstop play was brilliant in a five-year career.

Randie Richmond, the Rockets’ top pitcher was named to the first team. She batted .377 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 27 RBI and was 20-6 on the mound with a 129 ERA and an opponent’s batting average of .213. She struck out 97 and walked 21.

Claire Jager, the team’s catcher, batted .420 with 17 doubles and 34 RBI.

Clarke had two players named to the Class 3A first team with Vanessa Bakley, a senior, batting .392 with 27 RBI and Sydnee Redman, a senior, with a .388 batting average and 44 RBI. She was 8-2 pitching.

Centerville senior Lexi Riggall was also a second team Class 3A pick with a .410 batting average, five home runs and 41 RBI. Junior Abbey Sweet made the third team with a .400 batting average, 19 doubles and 33 RBI. Davis County’s Bailea Yahnke, a sophomore, batted .396 with seven home runs and 278 RBI, made the third team.
