The Blue Demon basketball team scored a 64-49 victory over the Clarke County Indians on Tuesday night in Albia to remain undefeated on the season.
The victory did not come without a fight as the Indians took an early 5-0 lead. Joe Teno cut the margin with a three point goal and Albia took its first lead 8-7 on a score in the paint by Jackson Pence. Clarke County regained the lead in the final minute of the period with a three point goal and held a 13-11 advantage going into the second quarter.
Defense keyed a Blue Demon surge in the second period as Albia’s man-to-man defense turned up the heat turning steals into points. Though the Indians scored the first field goal of the quarter Albia made a 20-3 run to put a distance between them and their SCC rival. Three steal and score plays by Blake Chance, Jackson DeMoss and Teno coupled with fastbreak opportunities gave Albia a 33-18 advantage at the half.
The Blue Deon offense turned to a more inside game as Chance found Blake Stewart in the paint for six points while Jackson Pence and Brayden Messamaker added two points each at the block. Though Clarke County was able to 16 points in the period Albia continued to build the winning margin with 19.
The Indians came out in the fourth period on fire as Umar Bulis hit consecutive three point goals and added a driving scored to cut the margin to 57-44 but Albia made free throws down the stretch to maintain the lead and secure their fifth victory of the season.
Joe Teno and Blake Chance led the team in scoring with 17 points each while Stewart had 12. Messamaker, Nate Wynn, DeMoss and Pence each had four and Trey Griffin had two. Other stats are unavailable.
The Blue Demons improve to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in the SCC. They will host Davis County on Friday night.
