Lady Dees fall in five games in disappointing finish at Chariton

In one of the more frustrating matches of the season, the Lady Dee volleyball team fell 3-2 to Chariton. It was Chariton’s first conference victory.

The Chargers surprised Albia in the first match with a 25-21 win. The Lady Dees pulled it together and won the next two matches 25-18, 25-19, needing one victory to take the match.

But the wheels came off with Chariton winning 25-18 and 15-11 in the decisive fifth set.

Chariton’s Grace Bengston and Aubrie Richards ended with dominating performances in the front row. Bengston had 26 attacks and 19 kills with only two errors. She also had three blocks. Richards had 57 attacks with 17 kills.

Chariton also served well, going 94-100 as a team with 11 aces.

The Dees had a decent serving night, going 92-100 with 13 aces led by Alex Beard and her 23-23 performance with three aces. Ellie Spurgin was 11-11 with an ace, Abbie Martin was 14-15 with two aces, Abbey Griffin was 9-10, Makenna Ross 8-8, Hannah Isley 15-18, Jade Van Polen 7-8 and Maddy Persons 5-7.

In the front row, Griffin had 42 attacks and 20 kills with only three errors. Van Polen had 37 attacks with eight kills and nine errors and Isley had 30 attacks with 10 kills and 10 errors. Ross had 23 attacks and three kills.

The Dees finish out their season on Tuesday against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in Albia.

The Dees fall to 2-3 in conference play and are 10-13 overall.
