The Lady Dee volleyball team went 4-2 at the Ottumwa Invitational on Saturday at Evans Middle School losing twice to Burlington.

The weekend resulted in Albia moving back into conference play Tuesday (tonight) with a 17-4 record. The Dees were ranked 15th in Class 3A, but fell out of the top 15 when ratings were posted on Monday.

Solid defense and nine kills by Abbey Griffin propelled the Lady Dees to a 2-0 victory over Fairfield in their opening match of the day. Albia outscored the Lady Trojans 21-12 and 21-18 with Abbie Martin turning in nine digs during the contest.

In their second match Albia lost the first set 21-16 to the Lady Gray Hounds but rebounded to win 21-12. The final set went Burlington’s way 10-15. The Lady Greyhounds were dominant at the net as Angel Baylark had seven blocks during the match. Griffin and Ellie Spurgin teamed up for 18 kills in the contest but the blocks and the nine kills by Baylark and nine by Kylie May set the tone for the match.

Albia was able to soundly defeat Mt. Pleasant in the following match 21-17 and 21-11. It was Griffin’s turn to be dominant at the net with 12 kills and two blocks. Martin had another double figure performance from the back row with 10 digs.

After an overtime 26-24 win against SCC rival EBF, Albia sealed the victory with a 25-21 win to take the match 2-0. Along with 11 kills Griffin had two blocks and Tanae Thiravong had a block as well.

Albia then moved out of pool play to face off against the host team Ottumwa and handily won the first set 25-10 but dropped the second set 20-25. The Lady Dees, however, would move into the title rematch against Burlington without star senior libero Abbie Martin, who rolled her ankle in the second set against Ottumwa.

Martin will also miss Tuesday’s SCC game against Davis County.
