The Monroe County Sports Complex was alive with activity on Monday night as the Blue Demons took on conference rival Chariton in a double-header as well as hosting Senior Night honoring Nathan Crall, Edison Goodlow and Gage Wilson. Albia split with the SCC rival Chargers winning the opener 3-0 and dropping the nightcap 7-4.

Tein Thiravong tossed a two-hit shutout in the first game. “Tein has been solid on the mound all season and tonight it was great that our guys came through with the run support we needed to win,” said Coach Robbie D’Amato.

The Blue Demons threatened early as Hunter DeMoss reached by error and stole second, then went to third on Nathan Wynn’s sacrifice bunt. Ashtin Brand walked but the threat ended there. Albia came through with a run in the second inning with Thiravong singling. After a steal, Jaden Hugen ripped an RBI double.

Albia added two runs in the third. Wynn singled and Brand hit a home run. In the same inning Luke Bossard walked as did Gage Wilson but both were stranded. Barrett Bonnett singled in the sixth but did not advance.

Thiravong went all seven innings allowing no runs on two hits striking out five, walking none but hitting three batters.

In game two Chariton was able to score a run on two singles and an error. Albia responded with a run in the bottom half. DeMoss and Brand both doubled in the at bat. Chariton scored two runs in the third inning on three singles. Albia tied the game with two runs in their half of the third as DeMoss reached on an error, Brand singled and both scored on Gage Wilson’s RBI triple.

The Chargers took the lead in the fifth with a single, a walk and a balk that sent the go-ahead run across the plate. Albia responded again with a run in the bottom half as Luke Bossard singled and went to second on an error. Wilson singled and Nathan Crall loaded the bases with a hit. A walk to Barrett Bonnett sent the tying run home.

Errors in the seventh inning cost Albia three runs as Chariton scored on one hit, a double, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI ground ball. Albia threatened in the seventh as Wilson reached by error and Crall singled but they were left on base.

Edison Goodlow started the game going five and a third innings allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out eight and walking two. Bonnett came in relief for one and a third innings allowing three runs on three hits, striking out one and walking none.

Albia goes to goes to 4-16 on the season and 3-12 in the SCC. They traveled to Centerville on Wednesday.
