The Albia Blue Demon basketball team collected their seventh SCC victory by defeating Clarke County 60-44 on Friday night in Albia. On senior night the Blue Demons were able to use a dominant third period to score the victory.
In the first quarter Albia opened the scoring as Carson Stocker drove to the basket for two at the 7:20 mark. The Indians went on an 11-2 run to hold an 11-4 lead with 1:34 left in the quarter. Albia went on a 5-2 run to end the period and as Brayden Messamaker hit a three-point goal with 16 seconds left Albia had drawn close facing a 13-9 deficit.
Baskets by Nathan Crall and Messamaker to start the second quarter tied the game at 13-13. After four tied scores and three change of leads, the half ended with Blake Chance hitting two free throws to tie the game at 22-22.
Albia dominated the third quarter. Chance started the half with a steal and score that set the tone for the quarter as the Blue Demon defense held the Indians to six points while putting up 26. Chance scored seven two point goals, a three and three free throws accumulating 20 points during the eight minutes. Messamaker added two three point goals to the barrage leaving Albia ahead 48-28.
The fourth quarter was evenly played with Chance adding 10 points to his individual effort and Beau Leshen offered the only other two points. Clarke County managed 16 points but offered no threat to the Blue Demon winning margin.
Chance finished with 36 points while Messamaker had 16. Nate Crall had four, Leshen two and Stocker two. Chance, Nate Wynn, and Joe Teno each had two assists while Crall and Messamaker had one each.
Nate Wynn, Leshen and Chance led Albia in rebounding with 10 each, Messamaker had three, Crall two, Teno one, Stocker one, and Blake Stewart one. Chance had four steals, Crall one and Messamaker one. Leshen, Crall, Teno and Messamaker each had a blocked shot.
The Blue Demons advance to 12-5 on the season and 7-4 in the SCC. They played at EBF on Saturday.
