The Albia Lady Dee volleyball team collected three victories on Thursday evening at the Fairfield Quadrangular. Albia defeated Fairfield 2-0, EBF 2-0 and Hillcrest Academy (formerly Iowa Menonite) 2-0 to claim their first championship at this event.
The Lady Dees are perfect this season in tournament play, giving up a single set in the Albia Tournament and Fairfield Tournament combined.
Albia defeated Fairfield 25-22 and 25-21. Abbey Griffin, who leads the state in kills, posted three ace serves and 11 kills in the match to lead the way for the Lady Dees. Abbie Martin, who ranks 10th in Class 2A in serving aces, was 5/5 in serving with eight digs on defense.
In the EBF match Albia used 12 kills by Griffin and two blocks by Tanae Thiravong to defeat the Rockets 25-22 and in overtime 26-24.
The final match of the night had Albia defeating Hillcrest Academy 25-19 and 25-4 fueled by the 10 ace serves by Martin. Albia was 46/49 from the service line with Alex Beard contributing 10/10 with two aces. Griffin had 11 kills while Beard had 14 assists in the match.
Offensive stats for the night are as follows:
Hitting—Beard 21/24 with six kills; Griffin 68/82 with 34 kills; Jenna Gronewold 9/10; Addison Halstead 7/14 with three kills; Ellie Spurgin 28/33 with nine kills; Sophie Waber 9/10 with two kills; Emma Wenger 1/1 with one kill.
Serving—Beard was 18/19 with four aces; Ashley Beary was 2/3; Griffin was 16/19 with four aces; Gronewold was 12/13 with three aces; Halle Hindman was 7/7 with two aces; Martin was 30/32 with 12 aces; Spurgin 14/19 with two aces; Waber 1/2; Wenger 19/21 with one ace; Adelina Curiel was 3/3.
On defense Thiravong had two blocks, Griffin one and Waber one. Beard had 18 digs; Curiel one; Griffin 15; Gronewold two; Martin 30; Spurgin 19; Wenger three.
