At this point in the season, heat doesn’t seem to bother the Albia Lady Dees softball team. Or rainouts, or much of anything really.
Albia exploded for five runs in the second inning against 20-16 Fairfield, champions of the Southeast Conference, beating the Trojans 6-1.
It was Albia’s third game in two days and it was just another day at the park. The Dees rattled Fairfield for eight hits including doubles by Kennedy Schroeder, Alex Beard, Abbie Martin and Ellie Spurgin.
The Dees had bases loaded in the first inning with a walk by Schroeder and a single by Ross, but consecutive grounders by Beard and Jena Lawrence ended the inning.
The Trojans came right back and loaded the bases on two walks and a single, but a nice catch by Spurgin in left ended the inning with the score tied at zero.
Abbey Griffin led off the second with a walk, Martin walked and with one out Spurgin laced a double to drive in Griffin. Schroeder doubled to drive in Martin and then Ross walked.
Beard belted a two-run double to give Albia a five-run inning.
And that’s more than enough runs for Lawrence, who pitched shutout ball in the second, third and fourth, giving up just two hits.
Albia scored again in the fifth when Griffin reached on an error and Martin drove her home with a double. Fairfield’s only run came in the fifth when a runner reached on an error and scored on a single.
The Trojans went down in order in the sixth and had two on in the seventh via an error and walk, but Lawrence forced three infield outs.
She gave up a run on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Dees will be in Ottumwa on Friday taking their 22-3 record and seventh Class 3A ranking against a pair of tough teams in Southeast Polk (19-14) ranked 15th in Class 5A and Solon (21-13) ranked 9th in Class 3A.
The Dees have at least one more home game on Monday when they play Twin Cedars.
