Albia A

The 2019 soccer season came to a close for the Albia Blue Demons as they fell 3-1 at the hands of the Pella Christian Eagles on Monday night in Pella.

The Eagles captured a 2-0 lead in the first half. Pella Christian’s first goal came on a free kick. An Eagle player won the ball and flicked it into the goalie box to an unmarked player who was able to finish the ball into the back of the net. The second goal came on a Blue Demon goal kick.

“We had a poor first touch in the midfield which led to a counter attack and the PC player made a nice shot from the right side,” said Coach Aaron Koester.

Pella Christian made it 3-0 early in the second half scoring on a breakaway. “Zach came out but did not collect the ball. Then he chose to not retreat into the goal and a Pella Christian forward followed and put the ball into the empty net,” said the coach.

Albia was able to score on a free kick by Ian Greiner. “They were the better team tonight. They really did a nice job of winning the midfield even with our possession advantage,” said Coach Koester. “We did not execute our game plan. PC limited our chances offensively. We just weren’t on our A game tonight.”

Also garnering shots on the night were Adam Waber, Carson Stocker and Trevor Cloyed. Zach Lawrence had four saves.

“I want to extend a special thanks to our seniors Carson Stocker, Trevor Scholtus, Cole Folkerts and Jaquan Stallworth for their contributions. Each contributed to the team in special ways and made this season better by their efforts,” said Coach Koester.

“The future of the program looks bright. We are only losing four seniors. We have some quality eighth graders coming up and a lot of experience coming back to create a lot of good things in 2020. Our off season will be focused on commitment to becoming a better athlete and person. I'm already looking forward to our first game of the year in 2020 at home vs. Pella Christian who lost nine to graduation,” said the coach.
