The Albia Lady Dees evened their South Central Conference record to 1-1 with a dominating 3-0 win over Clarke, 25-10, 25-7, 25-6.

Albia got off to a slow start in the first set, trailing 6-5 at one point, then Jenna Gronewold came to the service line and helped the Dees storm to a 14-5 lead. Clarke would score just five more points in the set.

There would be no slow starts in the next two sets. In the second set Elllie Spurgin served the first three points with an ace and an Abbey Griffin kill. Abbie Martin got to the service line with Albia leading 4-1 and served the Dees to an 8-2 lead. She had two acres, Griffin had another kill and Gronewold had a nice tip shot for a point.

Martin served long to give Clarke a point, but Albia got it right back and Gronewold came to the service line scored four points with two aces.

She hit long, Griffin got the serve back with a kill and then served four points to 17-4 behind an ace, an Alex Beard kill and an Addy Halstead kill.

Freshman Ashley Beary served four points to 20-5, then Beary came to the service line and served out the game at 25-7.

Coach Missy Cox-Dustin shuffled her line-up with fresh JV players coming in to join the four seniors and they didn’t miss a step, holding Clarke to six points in the set. Adelina Curiel, Meghan Jones, both sophomore, Sophie Waber, Ashley Beary, Addy Halstead and Emma Wenger, all freshmen, saw considerable playing time.

Martin started out serving and with three Griffin kills got the score to 4-2. After a Halstead kill, Wenger served seven points with two aces, two Griffin kills and another Halstead kill.

Griffin served to 18-3 with three aces, a Halstead kill and a Spurgin kill. Beary served and moved it to 21-3 behind a Jones kill, then Spurgin served the set out with a Jones kill, two Griffin kills and an ace.

In the match, Griffin had 15 kills in 23 attempts, was nine for 12 serving with four aces. Beard was 10-10 serving with four aces and had 26 assists. Martin was 13-14 serving with two aces. Spurgin had eight kills in 13 attack attempts and was 9-9 serving with two aces. Wenger was 10-10 serving with two aces. Gronewold was 11-12 serving with three aces and had four kills in six attempts. Jones had two kills in five attacks. Albia had two blocks with Griffin and Tanae Thiravong getting one each.

As a team, Albia was 68-73 serving with 17 aces and a .932 serving efficiency. They attacked 61 times with 34 kills and only three kill errors.
