As the temperatures outside dripped to single digits the Blue Demon basketball shooting ran cold as well and Albia dropped an SCC contest to Centerville 50-42.
The first quarter was evenly played with both teams being stingy on defense but a steal and score play by Nathan Crall tied the game at 9-9 at the buzzer. With Albia changing defenses from man to 2-3 zone, the Blue Demons were able to hold Centerville to 11 points in the second period but failed to score until Brayden Messamaker hit two free throws with 3:30 left in the half.
Free throws by Carson Stocker and a steal and score play by Blake Chance in the final two minutes kept Albia close at the half down 20-15.
Albia came out in the third quarter scoring seven points early but managed only two more points in the final five minutes of the third quarter, and they found themselves facing a 34-24 deficit going into the fourth period.
Albia managed only four points in the first four minutes of the fourth missing great opportunities but allowing the Big Red to increase their margin 45-30. Free throws by Stocker at the 1:50 mark made it 47-32 and three point goals by Jackson DeMoss and free throws by Trey Griffin cut the lead to 50-42 in the last minute of play.
The Blue Demons fall to 9-5 on the season and 5-3 in the SCC.
Boys hold Fairfield
to 50, but can’t find
A great defensive effort by the Albia Blue Demons on Friday night was just not enough as they lost to the visiting Fairfield Trojans 50-36.
Albia held Fairfield scoreless throughout the first quarter only to have the Trrojans hit a three-point goal at the buzzer. Still Albia was unable to put much distance between them scoring only seven points in the period. Nate Wynn scored two fields goals in the first three minutes and Beau Leshen added one to make it 6-0 with 5:07 left in the quarter, but the Blue Demons managed only one more point in the period.
Fairfield took the lead early in the second quarter scoring the first six points. The Trojans used a 1-3-1 half court trap to force turnovers that led to points and by the 5:06 mark they had built a 14-7 lead while Albia continued to struggle shooting. Though scoring was difficult for both teams, Fairfield edged further into the lead making the margin double figures with 1:03 left in the half 23-13. Neither team could score in the final minute and went to half time with Albia down 23-13.
Even though Albia’s shooting in the third quarter seemed to get some life as Brayden Messamaker hit three from outside the arc, Fairfield was able to maintain a working margin and hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to take a 36-27 advantage into the final eight minutes.
After Albia ran a play for Messamaker only to have his three-point try fall short, Fairfield hit a three point goal to fuel a seven-point run and the Blue Demons were quickly down 43-27. A drive by Blake Chance and a three-point goal by Nathan Crall kept Albia in the game but with three minutes left Fairfield began to hold the ball with a 47-32 lead. The Trojans were able to hit free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Messamaker led the team in scoring with 11, Chance had 10, Wynn four, Leshen four, Crall three, Joe Teno two, and Liam Winfield two. Leshen and Chance each had three assists, Carson Stocker two, Crall one and Teno one.
Leshen, Chance and Teno each had six rebounds. Crall had one and Gage Wilson had one. Teno had two steals while Leshen, Chance, Wynn and Winfield each had one.
Albia falls to 9-4 on the season.
