The Albia High School boys’ golf team opened the 2019 season by facing some of the top competition in 2A on Tuesday at the Lynnville-Sully Quadrangular. The Blue Demons finished second to last year’s state runner up Prairie City-Monroe. The Mustangs won with a team score of 162 followed by Albia (177), EBF (203) and Lynnville-Sully (277).
The individual medalist was Andrew VanRyswyk shooting a 38 and Gatlin Boell was runner-up with a 39, both from PCM. Ian Flahive was Albia’s top scorer coming in with a 42 followed by Tein Thiravong with a 44. “I was really happy with how Ian Flahive played,” said Coach Marty Hermsen. “He has been taking lessons and really working hard at his game to get better. Tein Thiravong also played well for a kid that just picked up the game last summer. Tein played a lot this past summer and has a really good swing for a beginning golfer.”
Dawson Hermsen shot 45, Cody Kosman 46, Gage Wilson 47, David Fisher 52, Zach Jones 54, and Chase Maddison 56. “Gage Wilson really struggled with his putting today having hit five, three putts. So we know he will shoot better next time out. Dawson Hermsen struck the ball well but struggled with his chipping and putting. David Fisher was playing well until the last four holes going nine over during those holes,” said Coach Hermsen. “If he bogies out he shoots 43 or 44. Cody Kosman played well for the first time out and I hope his solid play continues this season. Chase Maddison got into some trouble off the tee and shot 54 with six penalty shots from his tee ball. Zach Jones also struggled with penalties to shoot a 56.”
Albia will be at home on Thursday hosting a quad including Chariton, Clarke County and Moravia. “I was proud of the guys but they know I want better things. We have some talent but need to work harder to get to the level of PCM,” said the coach.
