The 2019 track season is underway, as Albia started their season on March 8 in Pella at Central College hosted by Pekin. The weather was a toasty 75 degrees inside and the team had the opportunity to get on the track and run off some long winter rust. “What a long winter we have had, and to get out and compete against some top notch teams was very satisfying. The coaching staff wanted to see these young men run, throw, and jump to see where we stand this early, and to compete,” said Coach Darren Hill.
That’s exactly what Albia did in the meet.
In a non-traditional meet with events like the shuttle relay, California mile, and a college version of a distant medley where the foursome runs (1200, 800, 400, 1600) in that order, the Blue Demons had a good night. The 55-shuttle relay was the first event, and the team of Logan Stalzer, Wade Myers, Gage Wilson and Nate Crall took second. In the JV portion of this event, the team of Blake Chance, Nick Heffron, Blake Stewart, and Jackson Pence placed first. Albia’s third team of Fee, Zach DeMoss, Flattery, and Anderson placed third.
The 55 shuttle hurdle team of Drew Winke, Carter Anderson, Nathen Wilson and CJ Ratliff placed third. The varsity 4x200 team of Winke, Myers, Stalzer, and Crall placed second by .04 seconds. The JV team in the 4x200 of Wilson, Pence, Heffron, and Nathan Parks placed first. Albia’s third team of Stewart, Chance, Fee, and Sovern placed 5th.
Three Albia freshman placed in the JV 55 High Hurdles. Carter Anderson won in a time of 10.06, CJ Ratliff second with a time of 10.22, and Damon Sovern ran a time of 11.28 for fourth place.
The California mile was up next. This event has eight runners, with all of them taking a lap around the track before handing off the baton. Albia’s varsity team of Winke, Myers, G. Wilson, Crall, Pence, Stalzer, Heffron and Parks won the event in a time of 3:21.85. The JV team of Stewart, Chance, N. Wilson, Chaz Fee, Sovern, Ratliff, Eli Zanoni and Doug Flattery also placed first in a time of 3:32.19. Albia’s third team of Anderson, Bonnett, Teno, McMurray, Eli Smith, B. Ratliff, J. Myers and Thomas placed 5th.
In the long jump, Gage Wilson placed third with a leap of 19’4”.
Our 4x8 team of Brock Ratliff, Cody Dalman, Max Teno, and Dawson Bonnett placed 5th, and all ran their personal best 800 times. The JV 4x8 team of Zanoni, Gavin McMurray, Joe Myers, and David Thomas placed 5th.
The distance medley team of B. Ratliff, Dalman, CJ Ratliff, and Teno placed 6th with a time of 3:44.93
The 4x4 team of Chance, Parks, Heffron, and Brock Ratliff placed 5th with a time of 4:01.88.
“This meet is pretty much all relay events, with the exception of the High Hurdles. We had some great performances throughout the night. In comparing our times to previous years, our kids had better times this year than they did last year. With us not getting outside much this year, it is really hard to get in some quality miles, which is what our distance kids need. I am really excited for this track season. We are very green, in terms of the blue oval experience. We have Winke that has been there before and has had some great success, placing first three times, and placing or qualifying in several other events. We are as athletic of a track team as I have ever coached, and we have some lofty goals, and this is one step in the journey. Albia will be back on the track, again at Central on Thursday night, and then back again on Friday.”
