Douglas Kent McLey Sr., age 69, of Melrose, IA, passed away July 9, 2022 at his home in Melrose.
Doug was born on February 8, 1953, to Francis Marion and Ruth Eloise (Brower) McLey in Woodward, IA. He grew up attending school in Woodward and graduated with the Class of 1971. Following high school, received certificates for computer programming before he joined the Air National Guard where he served his country from 1976-2005, retiring as Master Sergeant. He belonged to the Tactical Fighter Wing #132 in vehicle maintenance. On April 21, 1973, he was united in marriage to Darla Mulcahy and to this union, 2 sons, Scott and Jacob, were born. Doug and Darla later divorced. In October of 1981, he married Nancy Ann Van Buskirk. To this union, 2 children, Crystal and Doug Jr., were born. Doug and Nancy later divorced. On September 22, 1990, Doug married Darlene Lynn Gill and gained a daughter, Sara. Doug and Darlene shared 27 years of marriage prior to her passing on November 10, 2017.
After retiring from the military, Doug moved to Melrose where he and Darlene owned and operated the Melrose Market in Melrose and the D & D Market in Russell. He enjoyed being outdoors, camping, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, and hunting for wild asparagus. He also enjoyed playing cards and cribbage, watching westerns, and listening to country music. Doug had a great sense of humor, loved to have gatherings with his family and friends, where he was always the life of the party. He was an excellent cook, excelling at grilling and fish frys.
Doug is survived by his children, Scott McLey, Sara Rimmer, Jacob McLey, Crystal (Ryan) Nordeen, and Doug McLey, Jr.; 5 grandchildren, Ellie, Mason, Tatum, James, and Settah; 2 great grandchildren, Jacob and Lexi; and his siblings, Mac (Pat), Frank, Dennis, Jeff (Pam), and Norm (Velda) McLey and Deanna (Terry) Cregeen. Doug is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. Doug is preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; his parents; a brother, Keith McLey; 2 sisters-in-law, Joan and Mary; and a brother-in-law, Vern.
A Celebration of Doug’s life will be held from 1:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Melrose Community Hall on Saturday, August 20, 2022.
Inurnment at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter, IA, will be held at a later date.
