Gary Grohe, 87, of Fort Madison, passed a way
on Dec. 28, 2022 at SEffiMC, Fort Madison.
He was born Sept. 16, 1935 to Earl and Nona
Kness Grohe in Coon Rapids. He married his
.------, high school sweetheart, Joan
Coffman on June 1, 1958, at the
First Christian Church in Albia.
GaTy graduated from Albia
High School and attended Simpson
College, Central College
and the University of Missouri
before receiving his bachelor's
degree from Iowa State University.
He then earned his
master's degree from Northeast
Missouri State University. Gary accepted a
building trades/drafting teaching position at the
Fort Madison Community School District, where
he taught for 20 years. Gary also assisted in
coaching the golf team.
He was a lifelong educator and enjoyed all outdoor
activities, especially the Mississippi River.
Gary loved playing cards, being with family and
friends and spending tjme at the cabin he built
at the Lake of the Ozarks. His grandchildren
have lots of fond memories of spending time in
his workshop with hitn.
Gary is survived by his wife Joan, and daughters
Julie (Loyd) Nickel of Norwalk: and Jane
Rees of Fort Madison; and his grandchildren
Kelsey Nickel of West Des Moines Christopher
Nickel of Des Moines, Ryan Rees of Donnellson
and Jason Rees of Ankeny. He is also survived by
his brother Roger (Melba) Grohe of Benson Ariz.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and
sister, Marilyn Brown.
A private burial service will be held at a later
date.
