Velma Irene Schabilion was born on August 23, 1920 in Columbus City, Iowa to Harold Merton and Viola Merle (Smith) Schabilion. After graduation from the Columbus Junction High School in 1937, she attended the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport, Iowa.
She married Michael J. Slofkosky on July 4, 1946 and to this union four children were born: Carolyn, Larry, Paul and Kenneth. Velma and Michael owned and operated Slofkosky Hardware in Lovilia from 1946 to 1970. Michael preceded her in death in 1970.
From 1975 to 1984, Velma worked at the First Financial Savings and Loan in Albia where she became the office manager.
Velma was married to John Schleier on May 17, 1980 until his death on June 27, 1983. She later married Larry Mishler on September 5, 2003 and moved to Knoxville. He preceded her in death on May 18, 2008.
Survivors include her children: Carolyn (John) Lutz of The Villages, Florida; Larry (Sharon) Slofkosky of Spring Valley, CA; Paul Slofkosky of Knoxville, Iowa and Kenneth (Lois) Slofkosky of Kansas City, MO; four grandchildren: Eric Lutz of Silver Springs, Maryland; Mark (Katie) Lutz of Brighton, Michigan; Emily (Derek) Fern of Morrison, Colorado and Michael (Helen) Slofkosky of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; six great grandchildren: Andrew, William, Ainsley, Brody, Hayden, and Violet. Also surviving are nieces and nephews: William (Dory) Schabilion of Bondurant, Iowa; Helen Schabilion of West Liberty, Iowa; James (Phyllis) Locke of Muscatine, Iowa and Robert Locke of Muscatine, Iowa.
Preceding her in death are her parents: Harold and Merle Schabilion; husbands: Michael Slofkosky, John Schleier, Larry Mishler; sisters: Catherine Locke and Esther May Schabilion, brother: Dan Schabilion; nephew: Danny Schabilion; daughter-in-law: Kathy Slofkosky; brothers-in-law: Howard Locke and Robert Westlake.
Velma was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Peter's Catholic Church. She also volunteered for Helping Hands, The Shared Food Program and Monroe County Hospice.
Velma enjoyed country music, cross stitch, bowling, bingo, fishing, playing cards, cruises and tours. She loved family gatherings and cherished her grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia, Iowa Tuesday, January 11, 2022, opening to the public at 3:00 p.m., and Velma's family will be present from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday evening at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lovilia at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Lovilia. Because of the highly contagious Omicron variant, the family requires that all in attendance wear a mask and practice social distancing.
