About Us

The Albia Newspapers is the oldest continuous business in Monroe County, dating back to 1862 when Matthew Robb founded the Albia Union, a newspaper supporting Abraham Lincoln and his Republican ideals. It was later merged with the Albia Republican. The Monroe County News was founded in 1890 as a Democratic mountpiece and the two newspapers came under the same ownership in 1924. Only a half dozen or so publishers have managed the newspaper. Robert Larson served as editor-publisher for 41 years and editor-publisher, Dave Paxton, has served the newspaper for 36 years.
