Jena Lawrence

Jena Lawrence was in complete control over #1 ranked Class 4A Carlisle, even after a rain delay of an hour and 20 minutes. She scattered four hits, struck out five and pitched in front of a perfect Lady Dee defense.

“Had we come out of the first week with a 4-2 record, I would have been thrilled,” said Albia Lady Dee Coach Jani Dorpinghaus. “This is unbelievable.”

The final two wins of the first week of the season came on Saturday as the Lady Dees beat up Class 1A #4 Wayne 10-1 in the first game of the Carlisle Tournament, then met defending Class 4A champion and #1 ranked Carlisle and drubbed them 7-3.

The game took forever to play because a downpour near the start of the fifth inning with Albia leading 4-2. The Dees had chased senior starter Molly Hoekstra after three innings.

Albia went down in order in the first and Carlisle got a hit from their #3 hitter in the first but she was left stranded at second. In the second inning, Lawrence singled, Martin reached base on a fielder’s choice as Lexie Jones (running for Lawrence) scrambled to second, Lauren Bayer doubled to score Jones and Martin, then Mackenna Jones singled to drive in Bayer. Aliya Meyer (running for Jones) scored on a passed ball to give Albia a 4-0 lead.

Lawrence gave up another single in the second, but struck out two to end the inning. In the top of the third, Albia continued to hit Hoekstra hard. Alex Beard ripped a one-out single and then Lawrence crushed a pitch up the middle that was caught and Allie Major was doubled up. Carlisle’s coach had seen enough and switched pitchers in the fourth.

The Wildcats scored their first run in the bottom of the third with Delaney Schnathorst hitting a single, stealing second and moving to third and then came home on a pair of wild pitches. A pop up to Abbey Griffin at second and another Lawrence strikeout ended the inning.

Lexxi Link got through the fourth with only Dani Workman hitting a single but Lawrence retired the Wildcats in order. Ellie Spurgin led off the fifth with a single when the downpour hit. An hour and 20 minutes later the teams were back on the field. Griffin came to the plate and hit a deep shot over the left field fence to give Albia a 6-2 lead. With one out, Beard drilled a solo home run making it 7-2.

Carlise would score a run in the fifth on a walk, a stolen base and a fielder’s choice RBI, but Lawrence set them down in order in the final inning, with a diving catch by Griffin at second, a nice catch by Spurgin in left and a well fielded play by Jones at third.

Lawrence scattered four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Beard led the team at the plate with a single and a homerun. Griffin homered and drove in two, Bayer doubled and Lawrence, Workman, Jones and Spurgin all singled.

The Dees traveled to 4A #3 Oskaloosa on Tuesday night and travel to Knoxville on Thursday.
