The Albia Blue Demon baseball team lost 9-8 in extra innings to the Panthers in Knoxville on Thursday night.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a single, followed by a double and another base hit. Albia responded with a run in the top of the second as Jackson Pence singled. Hunter DeMoss advanced him to third on a base hit and Logan Spaur’s single scored the run.
In the third the Blue Demons tied the game at 2-2 as Ashton Brand ripped a homerun to left centerfield. Knoxville added a run in the third with a single, a fly ball that advanced the runner and an RBI single. Albia scored twice in the fourth with Barrett Bonnett reaching by error followed by a single by Logan DeBrouse. A base hit by Jaden Hugen loaded the bases and two runs scored on Brand’s base hit. Knoxville tied the game with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on consecutive singles and an RBI double.
Knoxville went up 6-4 with a run in the fifth on a single and a double. Albia threatened in the sixth as Brand reached by error. A base on balls advanced the runner and a base hit by DeBrouse loaded the bases but runners did not advance to make it 6-4 going into the seventh inning.
Albia took an 8-6 lead with four runs in the top of the seventh. Bonnett was hit by a pitch as was Spaur and DeBrouse hit an RBI single. Hugen walked followed by a walk to Brand and to Smith and Pence reached by error. The Panthers scored twice to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh on five base on balls.
After a scoreless eighth inning Knoxville scored one run with one out on three walks and a fielder’s choice.
Barrett Bonnett started the contest going six innings allowing six runs on seven hits striking out five and walking four. Drew Chance went two innings allowing no runs on no hits striking out one and walking two. Jaden Hugen went .1 inning walking two and Ashtin Brand came in and walked one batter.
Albia falls to 1-7 and will play Waterloo Columbus on Saturday.
