The Albia baseball team managed a double-header sweep of Clarke Friday night, 12-6 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap with Drew Chance throwing a 4-hit, 10-strikeout shutout. The victories even the Blue Demon conference record to 6-6 and raise the team’s overall record to 7-10.

In the first game the blue Demons hammered out 13 hits, scoring in every inning except the second. The team’s big inning was the fourth when they plated five runs. Eli Smith, Beau Little and Chance had the hot bats. Smith was 2-4 with a triple and an RBI, Little was 2-4 with a double and two RBI and Chance was 2-4 with two RBI.

Connor Pickerell  had an RBI double, Jackson Pence had an RBI single, Joey Pearson had two hits and scored three times, and Wyatt Sinclair and Carter Kamerick had hits.

The Blue Demons also made good use of eight Clarke walks.

Garin Grinstead had one of his best outings on the mound, giving up just one run on four hits and striking out four in four innings of work. Pearson gave up two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and Grant Powers picked up the save, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk.

In the second game of the sweep, Albia had another good offensive production with seven hits and five RBI, but the story was the complete game shutout by Drew Chance. Chance gave up just four hits and struck out 10 Indian batters on the night.

The game was actually a pitcher’s duel as A. Giza threw well for three innings, giving up just one run on two hits. In the fourth with a new pitcher on the mound, Albia struck for two runs, then added six in the sixth on four hits and five walks.

Little and Smith continued to hit the ball well. Smith had an RBI single along with a walk and Little had a double and two walks. Pence doubled, Hunter DeMoss had an RBI single, Sinclair had an RBI, Connor Renaud had an RBI single and Chance drove in a run.

After Friday’s play, Drew Chance lifted his batting average to .456, Jackson Pence is batting .340, Beau Little is at .311 and Garin Grinstead a solid .306.

Chance is now 4-2 on the mound with a 2.44 ERA.
