Albia A

With their second meet in three days, the Albia Boys cross country team captured the Moravia Invitational held at Honey Creek Resort Golf Course on Thursday, Sept. 24. (*Course would measure around 3.3 miles instead of the normal 3.1 miles)

With his first ever individual title in his decorated cross country career (two time individual state cross country qualifier and two time all conference) Dawson Bonnett would lead the race for the first mile, trade off with Mason Moore of Sigourney throughout the second mile and before taking the lead in the third mile and finishing 27 seconds ahead of second in a time of 19:25.

“Tonight is a big deal in a cross country runner’s world when they win their first individual title. Dawson won a grade level title as a freshman, but tonight adds his name with the champions of the past from Albia,” said Coach Todd Ratliff.

Max Teno and Brock Ratliff, a pair of seniors for the Blue Demons, would sprint it out to the finish as Teno would take the narrow victory (just 22/100ths separated them after 3.3 miles) with a fourth place finish in a time of 20:07.25 and Ratliff would finish 5th in 20:07.47. “These two seniors are battling hard with each other, which greatly improves the team scoring.”

Also cracking the top 10 and medaling were Ethan Stalzer, CJ Ratliff, and John Pistek finishing 7th, 8th, and 10th respectively. “All three of these guys looked good tonight.” Stalzer would edge Ratliff by a narrow .38 seconds-20:36.38 to 20:36.72. Pistek would cross the line in 20:56.25.

Finishing in the top 20 in 13th, 15th, and 16th place were Travis Sheffield in a time of 21:39, Carter Anderson in a time of 22:03, and Adam Sheffield in 22:06.

Finishing with the next 10 of the race were Logan Stalzer corralling 22nd in a time of 23:16, Cain Campbell 23rd in 23:17, Grant Wilson 26th in 23:28, and Cole Hafer 30th in 24:58.

Caelen Robinson would finish the course in 27:13 in 37th place and round out the team. “Caelen is working harder as he races and I am proud of the work he puts in.”

Team scores for the Moravia Invitational were as follows: Albia 21, Cardinal 60, Chariton 62, Moravia 101, Sigourney, Melcher Dallas, Centerville, Moulton-Udell.

Albia’s record jumps to 41-6 with the 47 teams faced on the season.
