The Albia Blue Demon baseball team defeated Clarke County 3-1 on Tuesday night in Albia, finishing in a tie for third place in the conference with a 3-3 record.
Though Clarke County doubled and singled in the first, they failed to run anyone across the plate. Albia looked to score early as well loading the basses in the bottom half as Jaden Hugen walked, Ashtin Brand singled, and Eli Smith was hit by a pitch, but two force outs at the plate and a caught line drive held the Blue Demons scoreless.
After an error and a single with one out in the second inning a line drive that turned into a double play ended the threat. Albia’s Tein Thiravong singled in the second but to no avail. The Indians went down in order in the third while the Blue Demons scored twice. Hugen singled and Brand walked. Jackson Pence ripped an RBI single and Hunter DeMoss singled Brand home.
The Indians went down in order in the fourth and the fifth while Gaige Rankin managed to reach by a base on balls in the fourth. Albia added a run in the sixth as DeMoss doubled and courtesy runner Sam Shepard scored on a single by Jameson Robertson. Clarke scored in the top of the seventh on an error, a double and a single.
Thiravong claimed the victory from the mound going six innings allowing one run on five hits striking out seven and walking none. Rankin threw the final three outs for the Blue Demons.
