The Albia varsity baseball team had a good week overall last week, going 3-2, splitting with SCC second place Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, beating Keokuk and splitting with Van Buren.
The Blue Demons move to 10-11 on the season and 5-7 in conference play. Last Tuesday against EBF (7-4, 16-5), the Blue Demons lost the opener 13-3 with the Rockets opening up an 8-0 lead in the third before Albia scored two runs. EBF went on to score five more runs in the sixth inning to end the game.
Jared McCrea led a 10-hit attack for the Rockets with three hits including a triple and three RBI. Braxton Malloy had a three-run homerun. Reilly Flaig and Zach Leonard also had homeruns. Drew Chance started on the mound and went four innings, giving up eight runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Colton Gillespie threw an inning, giving up three runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts and Sam Shepard went a third of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Malloy got the win for EBF, scattering seven hits with three walks and a strikeout.
It was a completely different story in the nightcap with Albia ace Tein Thiravong on the mound. The senior went six and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in the 5-3 win.
Thiravong ran into a little trouble in the seventh and Hugen came on to get the final out after the Rockets had scored a run. EBF’s other two runs were in the first.
Albia scored a run in the first, then picked upo three in the second and added an insurance run in the fourth.
Thiravong led the team at the plate with an RBI double. Elijah Smith had an RBI single, Grinsteadsingled and scored, Beau Little singled and scored and Logan Debrouse singled and scored.
