Martinsdale-St. Mary’s starting pitcher got bounced around a bit at the start of their game against Albia, giving up a pair of runs early on. Here Jaden Hugen eyes a pitch, ready to drive it for a first inning single.

The Albia Blue Demon baseball team took on the number one rated Martinsdale-St. Mary’s Blue Devils on Wednesday night in Albia. Five walks and four hit batsmen along with timely hitting gave the visitors a 20-3 victory.

Albia took a 1-0 lead in the first as Jaden Hugen singled, Ashtin Brand walked and Eli Smith knocked Hugen across the plate with an RBI single. Martinsdale-St. Mary’s used walks and hit batsmen, two errors and three hits to score nine runs.

Ashtin Brand put some life into the Blue Demon attack with a double to start the third inning, advanced on a passed ball then scored on Eli Smith’s sacrifice fly. Martinsdale had scored three in the top half to hold a 12-2 lead going into the fourth inning. Two base- on balls and an error set up the Blue Devils for an RBI single and an RBI double to score eight runs. Albia managed a run in the bottom of the fourth as Hunter DeMoss led off the at bat with a single and Tein Thiravong reached on a fielder’s choice. A base on balls to Beau Little advanced the runners and Jaden Hugen singled Sam Sheperd, running for Thiravong, across the plate. A fly ball and a strikeout ended the contest.

Eli Smith took the loss on the mound going one inning allowing three runs on two hits striking out none, walking three and hitting three batters. Barrett Bonnett went 2.2 innings allowing six runs on five hits, striking out two, walking three, and hitting one batter. Gage Rankin finished the game allowing five runs on three hits, walking two.

Albia falls to 1-1 on the season and had a rainout Friday against Davis County. They play Pleasantville Wednesday, Knoxville Thursday and Columbus Catholic on Friday.
